I'm not sure how I could improve this area. It's quite shady (gets few hours of sun in the morning)
Any suggestions welcome to get me started

Does the fence have triangular arris rails on the other side?

RhubarbCrumble1 · 07/10/2015 13:16

No Piglet John. The back fence which is much deeper does but not the side ones

It is already looking better. Have you got something to go on your empty plinth?

RhubarbCrumble1 · 07/10/2015 15:52

Not yet MyNight any suggestions?
I've ordered a much deeper trough like the one on left to go on the fence where barrel is and might plant the three bamboo up to create a screen.

Thank you pigletjohnI had a careful look and our fencing has triangular rails so thats ok.

OP if your neighbours are Chinese and have loads of interesting bamboo it could be nice to obtain shoots or cuttings from their bamboo, esp if it is thriving! They might grow other interesting Chinese plants too. This is a link to how to grow bamboo from cuttings

I have a jolly little gnome sneaked in among the cacti. He is an inch tall.

PigletJohn have you any experience of these? Could put one at top and one at bottom of conepcrete post for attaching trellis?

We have a pyracantha doing v well in a shady corner, it has bright colourful berries ( but maybe your baby is too small to leave it alone?).

I haven't any readymade brackets. It looks like they belt round the post, you might also consider this sort
www.amazon.co.uk/3-x-Concete-Post-Clips/dp/B00B3TKV9C/ref=sr_1_4/278-9962282-4370367?ie=UTF8&qid=1444295291&sr=8-4&keywords=concrete+fence+post+brackets

You need the weight to go straight down, not tugging the posts to one side, which will make them lean, so a trellis should be OK. I have a grapevine on a fence, just on wires and vine eyes that go into the wooden posts. My neighbour has a ladder roped to his.

BTW even galvanised brackets will rust after a few years when exposed to weather, as the zinc erodes, so I apply a couple of coats of dark paint before fixing.

I wonder if the fence is strong enough to take a self-clinging climber, saving you the trouble of fixing in supports? I'm thinking of something like a hydrangea petiolaris or Pileostegia viburnoides...

(Personally, I would have put in vine eyes along the concrete and put in the Gripple system, but I note from Piglet John that this is a Bad Idea and he is right about these things!!)
