They are fairly easy to dig out with a border fork; the roots don't go very deep, but they can 'travel' and you may need to follow roots along to get it all out. Use good gloves, obviously, so you don't get stung.

A small patch of nettles is good for wildlife.

hi Ferguson thanks for your reply. I have a wildlife area for my hogs but the lawn is 50/50 grass and nettles :-( so I do need to get rid preferably without digging up half of my lawn , unless I really have to.

Putting enough weedkiller down to kill that many nettles will kill your lawn anyway.
So do the environment a favour and get the garden fork out. It's a good time of year to do it. The roots are yellow and it can be quite satisfying getting them all out.

Rake over the disturbed earth and reseed with lawn seed this month before the frosts kick in.

more frequent mowing will get on top of it, the lawn must e fairly long and meadow like if your noticing the nettles, no need to resort to using herbicides, just increase the abuse you subject them too and they will die back

nettles make a good compost or liquid feed

thanks for all your replies I'll get the old fork out this weekend then. yes lawn is in terrible state mostly moss and weeds could do with new turf tbh.
