What would you do with these tomatoes? [photo]

I planted them late so they've only just finished growing. Is it too late for them to ripen outdoors now? Should I pick the tomatoes and bring them indoors to ripen? Does that even work? Confused

how about a green tomato chutney?

CantSee4Looking · 03/09/2015 11:18

I was going to say green tomato chutney. had to do this with our crop last year. Swore we were not growing tomatos this year and have had requests for jars from individuals who helped to eat the huge batch that the crop resulted. Obviously something went well. Recipe I used was actually really nice and I say this as someone who is not keen on chutney as a general rule

WRT your question about indoor ripening. Yes it can work, might need to put a banana/already ripe tomato in with them to help turn them though. Warm windowsil on its own can work, but you might be weather hindered in that this year depending on where you are

I'm in South East so it's about 15 degrees outdoors today. So you think I shouldn't leave them outdoors any longer? One of them is turning pink but the rest are all a define green!

Where's the best place to ripen them indoors - in a bowl? Dark or light warm place?

Gren tomato chutney. Or, cut in halves, freeze them/some, put in curry - it makes a good alternative to tamarind pulp. Make sure they cook & break down well though - point is that they are sour.

Aargh. Green tomato chutney.

Konserve · 03/09/2015 12:06

leave them on. until it's below 10 during the day they should ripen outside. you can take of all leaves to help the plant.

Flingmoo · 03/09/2015 13:17

Okay, I've decided to leave them on a tiny bit longer and keep an eye on the temparature! Took all the leaves off just now as recommended by Konserve. Got a few casualties which I will try to ripen indoors. Partly due to my overzealous pruning and partly my hungry 1 year old...

Love the green chutney suggestion too, by the way, will definitely do that if these don't ripen soon!

I live in the land of the cold, I pick most of my tomatoes green. They ripen just fine inside, not as flavorful but still quite yummy. I generally put them by the window but I've been told you could put them in a paper bag and they would ripen just the same.

P.S. Last year I left some tomatoes outside untill the frost. They continued to grow until then but when the weather hit zero at night the tomatoes stopped ripening and when I braught them in they stayed green.

ProfYaffle · 14/09/2015 18:09

I've had tomatoes ripen outdoor in November before now!

pizzaeatingmonkey · 20/09/2015 14:32

mamushka we've got another wonderful day in the south east (near Canterbury) so I'm hopeful we will get to eat red tomatoes this year. I've grown all mine in pots, but started too late, so I'm moving them into our old knackered green house and keeping the door as closed as it will go during the night time.

Nonnainglese · 20/09/2015 14:56

They'll ripen fine indoors or left on the plants in the greenhouse-don't water them, just let them die back. I was picking mine as they ripened at Christmas last year, and they were delicious.

lighteningirl · 21/09/2015 07:37

I put the green ones in a kitchen drawer with a banana worked a treat, but they may still ripen in the green house. I live in the SE unusually leave my greenhouse Tom's in as long as possible

seventhgonickname · 23/09/2015 14:05

If they're in a greenhouse leave them, outdoors leave but check regularly the most that will happen at the moment is that.they will ripen or not,you only need to worry when frost threatens

Buddy80 · 26/09/2015 11:20

Hi there, you can still use them to make tomato sauce, just add a few ripe ones. There is also green tomato bread, green tomato soup or cornmeal muffins.

Pico2 · 04/10/2015 21:58

When do you give up on them going red outside? We've had ones turning red recently. Is it too late for the rest?
