Because we get the question about what will grow in the shade so often, posts about it sometimes don't get many answers. So I thought I'd make a permanent thread that we can point people to when this comes up. I know some of you have written the same thing 10 or 20 times before, so hopefully this will save the repetition!

I'm hoping we can post some pictures of shade plants here so that people can see what they look like. A lot of them aren't all that familiar. Plus, I love pictures!! Grin

Bookbook good luck with hermaphrodite butchers broom. I planted one about 5 years ago in the shade under my Apple trees, and it's not grown since! In fact maybe I'll move it this weekend.

Holly I love your red ferns.

I saw a man buying three pots of sweet woodruff at Wisley the other week. Knowing how much it's spread in my garden under the apple trees, I was tempted to advise him just to buy the one.

BUmping this thread as I think others may find it as useful as I do. I am especially loving shove’s purple ferns.

Another bump for recent enquiries about advice for shady spots in the garden.

This area is in total shade under large 150 year old oak trees. The rhododendron is in 90% shade.
