fungus or eggs in ground?

I've googled without any success so thought I'd try the collective wisdom of mn.

In our lawn I found yesterday a half buried batch of little white balls. They are like polystyrene in texture. I have no idea if they are a fungus or eggs. Or maybe they are just polystyrene balls.

I dug them up, had a few pockets of these last year too.

Thanks!

Theyre slug or snail eggs :)

I've looked at pictures now, not that, there's no nest, no soil. The balls were in an open hole in the lawn with lots more underneath the few on top.

I'm not sure they are snail or slug eggs. They look like the pictures in the way they present in the ground but they were polystyrene in texture and the photos look more smooth and slimey.

I've never noticed them being slimy but they are usually smooth. Maybe yours were close to hatching? It's the right time of year for that.

You could put one into a jam jar and let it hatch to find out.

But if they look like slug eggs, do you want a slug that thinks you are its mummy?

I find these from time to time. They are eggs. Not sure what of!

AlternativeTentacles · 10/05/2015 08:55

They are slugs or snails, as already mentioned.

Adarajames · 10/05/2015 08:56

Yep, another saying slug / snail eggs, get rid or turn into soil surface for the birds to eat them

Ok thanks I'll accept they are slugs or snails. They did sound and feel like polystyrene when I poke them with my trowel though. Maybe they had hatched already.

Alternative - being a slug mummy....hmmm...do you think they spend all day saying "muuuuummmmmaaaayyyy"? Might be a fair swap for the slime if they don't.
