Hanging baskets, amateur question

I'd like to put a hanging basket up, Im a novice so would like to buy a ready made one, the thing is I want it all! I see people with these huge draping hanging baskets, (probably lovingly tended to) and wonder how they do it.

Can I buy one from say B&Q and then feed it with some sort of growing food?

Or do I need to admit I need to put the hard work in and build my own?

(Sorry if I've annoyed all the keen gardeners! )

You can absolutely buy one, though might be an idea to look at a garden centre or nursery. Water and feed regularly with tomato feed then take of the dead flowers as this will promote new growth. Don't put out until risk of frost over.

Thanks! We do have a few nice garden centres near by. When you say wait till risk of frost is over, that's hard to judge isn't it, maybe next month to be sure then.

Depends where you are in the country . Generally if you go with the end of May you'll be pretty safe, I'm living dangerously on that front this year and have pelargoniums out as can't be arsed to keep in greenhouse then harden off. But it is a calculated risk as m south coast and have a sheltered position.

If you are fairly northern I might hold off for now or do it and chuck horticultural fleece over at night or bring in if frost forecast.

Yes. Am North west, I'd best wait a few weekends then, I don't want to kill them before I've even started!

Buy as large a one as you can manage - small ones dry out very quickly especially when the plants have filled out and are competing for root space.

That's a good tip, I do fancy a huge basket, the front garden is all paved so I wanted a pop of colour.
