Scorching South facing garden, which shrubs?

I have a south facing garden, in the chilterns (so chalky soil) Can be breezy as we are part way up a hill.

We have a new wall of decking that id like to plant in front of, so would like shrubs that look good from above. It's a1930s house so I was initially keen on some big blowsy old fashioned hydrangeas but having done some research I think they would burn and suffer.
On a nearby wall I'm successfully growing an espalier fig, so I do need something that can take the heat.
Bamboo, for some reason, cannot survive in my garden...

Any suggestions welcome!!

This site looks reasonable, but of course based on what they have to sell

Cistus? Ceanothus? - the ones with smaller leaves are tougher.
