Honeysuckle; lonicera belgica is widely available and has fragrant flowers and a jasmine - again, scented, with little, white or pink star-shaped flowers. Clematis too.

Kiwi vine. Incrediably fast growing and strong.
Clematis, pretty flowers,
Jasmine, good aroma but may need protecting from frost when young.

Did you want evergreen or not?
Can you plant in soil or pot only?

Clematis Montana ! The jasmine sort - fast growing, ever green and the flowers smell beautiful .

Clematis Montana is very vigorous and will grow dense and bushy . And it's not evergreen . So I think you mean clematis armandii ? It's evergreen and has scented white flowers. ( I know , there are so many clematis, it's very confusing )

You can't plant the climbers right beside the lawn, they need a bit of space around the roots, so you'll need to make a border next to the trellis.

Remember that once they are grown they will be heavy and add a lot of wind resistance to the trellis , especially when they are in leaf . So the fence posts need to be very secure and strong .

All clematis like a long cool root run, so not great in pots in a hot sunny place .

OP- What aspect is your trellis ( eg west facing ) and what kind of soil and climate do you have ?

MummyBtothree · 24/04/2015 12:43

My garden and trellis is south fencing and will be growing in a narrow raised bed in front of the trellis. Havent a clue about soil type, how can I find out?. Thanks for all the suggestions

you can get a soil testing kit from any gardening centre - very easy to use and will tell you whether you are alkaline or acid.

In terms of climbers - can I add Rosa Banksiae Lutea - good growth, hardly any thorns, covered in clusters of pale yellow roses in early spring. Does only flower once but you could add a clematis to ramble through it and flower later in the year.

Stacey, I've just googled and you're rightGrin

Is your soil sandy or clay ? Does your garden get quite hot in the summer and do the plants wilt a bit ? Do you have to water things ?
