Does anyone know what this is?

This is an apple tree that was planted when ds was born, then transplanted when previous garden unavoidably lost. I can't lose it. It is currently in a tub.

Thanks for all help.

It looks like woolly aphid damage to me

shovetheholly thanks, I've had a rummage on the interwebs and I think I am now facing pest control. I really appreciate the help.

Sorry, I wrote a longer post but it seems to have got lost! Basically, I wanted to reassure you that it's sortable. It's horrible when a plant that has sentimental value goes down with something, but if I am right, this can be solved quite easily!

I have heard that neem oil works as an organic control method, though I've not tried it myself.

shovetheholly the rest of the very small paved yard with tiny strips of beds at the edge can be all done organically, and pretty much is. I don't really go for much intervention. As far as this tree is concerned, however, I'm happy to go all the way up to chemical warfare.

I kill more than I keep with plants, but this is important and I really appreciate your help pointing me in the right direction. There is a local shop which does garden stuff and I am going to go in and look helpless now I have an idea. I have had a quick look on Wiki and neem oil does look good, and they sell it on Amazon so worth a go.

I really appreciate this.
