Evening. a good book You have 40 bean plants? How many is an appropriate number for DH and I? I have about 8, not including the broken one, which I hope will recover. I don't want to have too many, or not enough!

I'm wondering about seedlings... I have loads of things like lettuce, rocket, etc, which ate sprouted but about the same size as cress and not getting much bigger. It feels silly to plant them out until they are significantly bigger, but I don't want to limit them. What should I do? why can't everything be like beans and shoot up immediately?

honeysucklejasmine · 17/05/2015 19:16

Are, not ate.

Oh, should add... My beetroot seedlings seems to be struggling to stay upright as stem is not thick enough to support it. Sad Would need a tooth pick to stake it!

TheSpottedZebra · 17/05/2015 21:15

Er, LinkDat, horrid is what that is. I have no idea, I am sorry. But I don't like it. It must be a penultimate life stage of something. Is it a cockchafer?

On a similar note, don't leatherjackets look like horrid little zombie willies?

honeysuckle are all the seedlings close together? Do they need pricking out into pots or trays?
Boo to the beetroot. Mine have all been chomped at the plot. But that's ok, as I have decided that I am going to reallocate all my sunny spots. And toms/peppers trump beetroot for me.

On which note, I am pleased to announce the inauguration of Ben Squash. Like Ben Nevis, but for squash. Yes, I have totally copied mink's Squash Mountainn, as well as followed her 'bbbanking ' advice. Lots of the mud that I dug out to make path/remove couch is now de-couched and piled up In an unused sunny-ish spot. More soil, and muck, to follow. And my squashlets are growing fast, so it won't be long before one sits triumphantly atop Ben Squash. Not that Ben Squash is very tall.

Good Evening!
spotted don't despair - all of us face the fact that we make mistakes, you just need to adapt. You may find at the height of summer that there is more sun than you think :)
LinkDat - what sort of size is it - I think its the wrong colour for a chafer grub, but there is a link here that may help
maria.fremlin.de/stagbeetles/larva-guide/
honeysuckle - 40 runner beans is way, way too many!* is probably about right for 2. I am planning on planting 12 and that gives enough for eating, freezing, and giving a lot away -( I thought I had bought a tray with about 12 spares in for emergency- when I started to pot them up, there were 30!) Now my favoured variety has germinated, I will find good homes for them.
Don't panic about the beetroot, the leaves and stems do straggle around, thats what they do.
I spent a good two and a half hours at the plot this morning - a lot of it sewing up holes in my brassica net. But I did manage to plant out my first lot of sprout plants , and now thats done, I can also plant out my lettuces in between them as a catch crop.

x post with spotted !
honeysuckle - that should have said that 8 runners sounds about right :)

Hi all, very late to the party :)

I don't currently have an allotment but may have the opportunity to create one to my own specs.

How big would you recommend to feed 5 adults? How do I go about planning what to do to make it ready, and then what to grow? I am a complete newbie so I need a complete idiots guide please for everything :)

RoosterCogburn · 17/05/2015 21:52

Oh dear, I was so pleased that my celery had germinated, then when I went to look at them today all the leaves had failed off just leaving tiny little pin sized stems! I'm not sure if I over watered them.

Still, on the plus side the beetroot has germinated and my lettuce and radishes look good

agoodbook · 17/05/2015 21:54

wow! welcome PuckyMup - thats a big question :)
Traditional allotment plots were designed to do just that , and in modern terms are about 250 square metres.
I have two 'half' plots end to end on a traditional site and probably have that, though not all of it is growing area .
Can I suggest my favourite book?
The Allotment Book by Andy Clevely is a bit of a bible for me, but I do use lots of others. It may be worth going to the library and seeing what they have.
And for me as I say every time someone asks - grow what you like to eat - no point otherwise :)
There are lots of helpful people on here, so just ask away!

Hi Puckymup, wow, that sounds like a great opportunity. I'm fairly new to the allotment game myself, and getting the amounts of things right, but ours is about 10x7m and you can pack a fair bit in. Also depends how many hours a week you think you are going to be able to spend on it in the growing season. As for what to grow, it depends when you are going to get started really, I'm still very much doing summer stuff only, most of which is either in or in the greenhouse waiting, not so sure about later in the year crops. That's the good thing about being on this thread, everyone says what they are doing so you pick up what to do when.

Well, managed an hour up at my plot this afternoon with DS, which was really nice. He's not interested in gardening , but was happy to gather a load of snails and make them run races along my bench box thing. He also enjoyed looking for baby slow worms, I reckon we've got at least three nests of them, I will say one thing for the using cardboard as mulch, it certainly encourages a lot of beasties to make homes under it.

My friend two plots down grows lots of runner beans, probably about 20 plants. She asked me to keep picking them while she was on holiday to keep them cropping and I reckon I filled a carrier bag each week with them, definitely too many! They do look stunning in full flower though.

PuckyMup · 17/05/2015 22:09

I hope to be able to spend at least an hour a day on it, with more as needed. It all depends on possible move which is why its only a maybe :) I don't think there will be any work on it this side of Christmas.

I'd like a green house, shed, fruit cage/s, cold frames, compost heap and a few raised beds as well if that helps with sizing? There is also the idea being floated of fencing it off and using a couple of weaner pigs to do the soil turning/bulk of root eating/fertilising before getting started as its a completely unused area, and I have heard ducks are good at snail control (but do eat shoots) so wondering if its just easier to make ALL of it "raised beds" (being raised to the top of a scaffolding plank) so its easier to make duck proof for supervised pest control?

I shall see if my local library has that book, thank you :)

I've been reading about complementary planting too but I can't seem to get my head around how much of everything you might need - does this come into play once you start on the garden?

So many ideas and TBH it feels completely overwhelming - I think I need to do baby steps but then I feel I need to plan it all (even if bits are just "spaces for X" for a while)?!

PuckyMup · 17/05/2015 22:14

I already have this book and this book and have just ordered the Andi Cleverly one too

LinkDat · 17/05/2015 22:32

Honestly it looked like a 2cm long fetus. It freaked me out so I fed it to the allotment chickens. Along with all the zombie willies I could find Hmm

agoodbook · 17/05/2015 22:37

lots of time then Pucky and maybe as a total novice, it will be best to start small and develop it, once you know for sure.

btw folks - I inherited an angelica plant which is at the far end of the plot, which while looking beautiful, is also looking a bit of a thug! (its enormous
,and is terrorising a poor rosemary bush) I haven't ever grown one- any special considerations, - is it just pretty- the only thing I know about eating it is when I have seen it for cake decoration! I googled and saw you could eat virtually everything - is it any good is what I want to know!

OP posts:
honeysucklejasmine · 17/05/2015 22:39

Wow, thank you as always for responses. This is a rather poor quality photo of seed tray. All similar size, although quite a variety in there. I guess I can top the soil up. Would I need to take shoots out then put back in afterwards? There are some seeds in there which haven't germinated yet. Could I just chuck some on top of them? I assume they'll just grow on up. Depends how much energy there is in the bulb I guess.

I counted... Have 8 runner beans, 6 brussels, 8 peas, 3 dwarf French beans, 3 courgette, a cucumber and 20 seed potatoes outside. Prob some things I can't remember now too. Have variety of seedlings inside and more seeds to sow, although I know I am pushing my luck, time wise. Still, no harm in planting them, they were cheap!

honeysucklejasmine · 17/05/2015 22:43

*energy in the SEED, not bulb. Although I am going to chuck a garlic clove or two in tomorrow.

agoodbook · 17/05/2015 22:58

Past my bedtime, but will just reply to honeysuckle
I think I can see some beetroot on the far left? firstly - it looks a bit dry - it needs to be damp, but not wet.And they need to be in good light. I sow seeds in separate pots for separate crops - usually a plant pot with a plastic bag over it until the seeds are through, and thinly over an area rather than in a line. Some seeds take longer than others to germinate, so it could be tricky to prick them out without disturbing others.

minkGrundy · 18/05/2015 01:36

linkday beetle grub I think but if you post it to iSpot someone eill tell you. ISpot is great fir all kinds of things from plants to butterflies that you might find. Someone usually ids them after a few hours.

Cedar03 · 18/05/2015 07:49

Honeysuckle - you can use a pencil to help prick out seedlings to plant on. Push it down the soil next to the seedling and then ease out the plant very gently. Then plant into a bigger pot. With lettuces and smaller seedlings plant more of the stem under the soil.

Went over to my plot yesterday. One of the runner beans planted out ladt week has gone into a sulk and is dying. Others look OK do no idea whats happened there. I've got some more at home just getting going so its not the end of the world.

Daughter enthusiastically planted more lettuce and carrot seeds. This could go either way - either none of them will come up or we'll have a lettuce glut as I've also got some in pots at home. I'm hoping for a glut!

We've grown tomatoes in half shade in our back garden - they do well as its sheltered although last year they got blighted. And salad crops like lettuces don't like full sun and prefer a bit of shade according to my gardening books.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 18/05/2015 08:05

8 runner beans would never be enough for me - I love them! I lived off cheese and Runner Bean Chutney sandwiches when I was pregnant. Yum. Plus, the dogs keep stealing them to play fetch.

I was all ready to throw the towel in on Friday after the slugs got yet MORE of my crops - including my last cucamelon - but I have picked my self off and sowed more so hopefully I'll still get some crops. New batch of cucamelons are in the kitchen where I shall keep a watchful eye on them. Also planted more lettuce, rocket, beetroot, swede and an apple pip with DS which - if it grows - will be planted in the rabbit's foragaing area so he can destroy nibble it.

Also potted up my sprouts (30!) and French marigolds. I don't need 30 sprout plants, do I? Oops.

link horrible is what it is

Welcome Pucky! I would start by writing a list of what you want to grow (ie what you like to eat). Then you can work out what you will need to grow those things. Ducks are awesome (see upthread). Definitely get ducks. Where are you?

Zebra Ben Squash sounds amazing! I'm feeling left out. Perhaps I should start work on Mount St. Squash?

shovetheholly · 18/05/2015 08:32

waves at everyone. I'm back from Crete, which was AMAZING! I have never seen so many flowers, birds and butterflies in my life.

First thing I did on getting through the door was to run to the greenhouse and have a look. LOADS of seedlings have come through while I was away! I feel such a warm sense of wellbeing at this! Sadly, the story at the allotment is not so great, though I do have a few tiny baby turnips and chard coming. Things seem to be taking a long while to germinate, perhaps because it is bloody freezing here. (Anyone else think this is a cold May?)

Runner beans - I had 10 plants last year and I had more beans than I could deal with for two, in spite of two very large chutney cook-ups, freezing as many as would fit in my average-sized fridge/freezer, and pushing them on anyone who would take them. I suppose it partly depends on how much freezer space you can devote to them, though. When I get my extension built (in my dreams) I am going to have a huuuuuuge freezer so I can store more stuff. 40 plants would be almost commercial-scale bean production I think!

I LOVE the idea of Ben Squash. How brilliant!

agoodbook · 18/05/2015 09:48

Good Morning!
shove - I bet it feels freezing here after Crete - and it is! Everything outside is slow, and taking a battering with wind- and up here in East Yorkshire it has been very dry too ( not so elsewhere) - last night/early this morning is the first rain for about 2 weeks - it looks as if its making up for it this week !
Honeysuckle- had another read of your post and the numbers of other plants - I find French beans are not as prolific as runners, so I usually plant more - but we really like them. - peas -mmmm actually I will be brutally honest- not nearly enough, when harvesting you tend to eat them ...and also you need quite a lot of plants to get a decent picking every 2/3 days- once podded a teaspoonful of peas is a sad sight :) and 3 courgettes - can I say that DH pleaded with me to cut down to 2 this year? But I am growing at least 3 :) You will be giving them away . Once in full flow, you will hopefully get 1 courgette off each plant every 1-3 days. Also with hindsight - would it be easier to sow beetroot directly into the pot you are going to grow it in? That way, you can sow them about every 1- 2" and just thin them out if they are too close together. They are hardy, and can be sown outside now. I sow a short row about every 3 weeks, so I have a few ready all the time.

honeysucklejasmine · 18/05/2015 10:02

Morning. I planted five more dwarf beans this morning, 3 more peas and five broad beans, as I have yet to have any successfully germinate. Also gave everything a good soaking and will be repotting things tonight in deeper soil etc.

I love fresh peas... Maybe I should sew a few more... I need some more containers I think!

Anyone know a good place to get supports? I prefer the textured plastic ones to bamboo, but equally am not prepared to break the bank for them.

agoodbook · 18/05/2015 10:08

Do you have Wilkinsons ( Wilkos) near you? - they do weatherproof/plastic supports - here
www.wilko.com/search?q=garden+stakes
and sow as many peas as you can :)

OP posts:
agoodbook · 18/05/2015 10:41

Cupcakes - i thought you had the toad patrol now - is he slacking? Are you sure its slugs? Not just the cold nights?
At the moment I've not had such a problem with slugs, but pigeons !!! I left my lovely looking peas for 2 days through sheer stupidity and they decimated them. I have re netted , and now ith the rain I am optimistic that they might motor off again. In the meantime, I have another row to sow !

OP posts:
LetThereBeCupcakes · 18/05/2015 10:59

agoodbook Definitely slugs (or maybe snails) - I saw the slime all over the soil! I've not seen any more toads so I've either been abandoned or he's gone off to find more recruits .
