If I grow Clematis up the fence will it need trellis? Fence is the neighbours not mine

Am I allowed to grow Clematis up our side of the fence? It's actually my neighbours fence, does this matter?

Also will Clematis need trellis or will it grow up the fence without support?

Also, will it cause future problems, e.g. what if the fence panel blows down in the wind, or what if the Clematis takes over? Should I buy a non-vigorous variety? Possibly I'm overthinking this, but these things cost money so I don't want to make a mistake. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Yes,it'll need trellis or wire.
You should be able to keep it under control.
It'll be lovely -go for it!

You could use wire and vine eyes for a cheap support but if you are planning on nailing anything into the neighbours fence including trellis it would be good to check with them first!

You are right - they can get heavy so perhaps avoid the more rampant Montana varieties but some lovely smaller growing ones to choose from that will also grow in pots. I've got loads of clematis and bought quite a few varities from Morrisons in the past. They are very cheap, a bit spindly and need a bit of nurturing at the start but have grown really well after a year or two. The garden centres also sell slightly smaller clematis plants for under a fiver.

Some clematis need to be cut back to the ground about now every year - look for one of these (it should be on the label), it will grow up every year to cover a good bit of fence but not become a nuisance.

If your neighbour is particularly grumpy and the fence a bit old and gappy, bear in mind that some tendrils may work their way through.
Surely only the most grumpy grump would mind though.

Hmm thanks everyone, my neighbours have zero interest in their garden - they literally have a patio and grass, not a single shrub/tree/flower in sight. They never go in the garden (they let the grass get really long, then mow it a couple of times per year). Unfotunately their fence is very gappy and thin and one or two panels usually blow down each winter, but I'd really enjoy the colour and interest of a clematis.

I will look out for the clematis which needs to be cut to the ground Purple

I would use wire and nail it into the posts.
