Can anyone advise me on this gardening project in a narrow bed

There is a narrow flowerbed between the side of our patio and the fence. It is about a foot wide, not much more. I think that the neighbour's patio comes right up to the fence on the other side.

I would like to plant bamboo there to grow up and create a screen. Do you think it will grow ok even in a narrow bed? What height/size bamboo should I plant? I was thinking of an evergreen type with small leaves - golden stem, if that is right? Hate the varieties with big leaves!

The only evidence I have of the bed being deep enough is that it currently contains a thorny climbing rose, but that doesn't really offer much screening beyond the fence top.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

As far as I know bamboo is very invasive. The roots would get under your patio and quite possibly your neighbour's too, causing slabs to lift/crack Shock

I don't know whether there are less invasive varieties or whether planting in a trough would contain it.

I've always been put off by horror stories of out-of-control bamboo and people having to remove infinite rhizomes. I do covet it though Grin

I think I heard leaving it in the pots when you plant it will contain it so that it doesn't take over. That's what I'm planning to do in my garden so I hope it's true

Apparently there is some kind of root barrier you can use...

Please use some kind of barrier if you plant bamboo, my most hated job is digging up bamboo that has spread from my neighbours garden

Not all bamboos run. Some are clumping and some will run.

I've used Scottish bamboo several times before and their we site is pretty comprehensive rehang what're llano where.

I've got several fargesia bamboos in the ground in my. garden and couldnt be happier with them. I've also got some phyllostachys bamboos and a sasa palmata which stay in their pots or they would take over the world.

There's LOADS of different bamboo.

What to plant*

Black bamboo is one of most attractive, and less invasive.

Trouble is, the larger the one you buy, the dearer it will be.

Thanks, I have been lurking on various bamboo sites and learned a bit about clumping bamboos versus spreading bamboos, so that is good news!
