Outdoor welly storage

I have had an epiphany that if the wellies were stored outside the back door, then I would no longer have mud trails through my kitchen.

So how to achieve this?

First idea is storage bench. Down side is that plastic ones don't look too nice; wooden ones rot; both would permanently have an inch of mud and dead woodlice at the bottom.

Could I get away with storing them on pegs upside down and off the ground but otherwise uncovered? I'm postulating that being upside down will prevent water coming in the top - but IME everything kept in the garden gets damp and grey - so maybe water flows upwards when no one is looking, and will ruin my wellies.

Could you get a small shed (like one of those bike stores maybe( and put the wooden posts inside?

If you leave them out , they'll get creepy crawlies climbing inside as well as damp.

The wooden one will last if you treat the wood , and look nicer.

Almost the entire back wall is patio doors - so you would struggle to fit much more than a box without interfering with sight lines, unfortunately.

you'd be putting cold wellies on Sad .

BarneyBoots · 09/03/2015 21:53

Well - the kids would be putting on cold Welles.

I'd be sipping tea in the kitchen watching them - and not sweeping and mopping mud crumbs behind them.

You can buy things in tack shops that hold a few pairs of wellys. You put them on upside down so they stay dry insideWink

I have a cast iron upside down boots storage...and damp mildew infected wellies. Well DH does Wink

Bought for about £30 from Amazon.

The reviews specifically praise this product for discouraging frogs from your wellies - though it's listed for indoor use

This looks pretty nifty - could be mounted high on the fence out of reach of spiders maybe....

There is no , " out of reach of spiders".

BarneyBoots · 09/03/2015 22:18

That's true! One of them was sat on my coffee machine this morning. Didn't even seem to want a cup when I offered. Just watched me drink mine. Weirdo.

I have something similar to the wooden Lakeland one - bought many years ago from a craft fair, so more rustic looking. I store the wellies outside - the downside is that they are in he sun in summer so I think that led to the plastic breaking (will think about moving it this year).
No spiders have been spotted.

I have this in my front porch and love it www.wellyracks.com/ but you might want to put it under an overhanging shelf to give it a bit more protection if you do't have a porch?

unlucky83 · 13/03/2015 14:07

I have an upside down welly holder but in my under stair cupboard/cloakroom...I was nervous of slugs climbing in if left outside!
But love the upside down bit - lets the mud dry, avoids dirty boot prints and in summer/we are going somewhere mucky I leave one outside and carry the whole thing in at night.

Actually I have 2...I made them myself. Photo of one
An off cut of hardboard from B&Q (50p) and a length of thick dowelling (cost about £4 iirc) - drilled holes in the base (I did have a wood drill the right size), cut the dowelling to length and stuck them in the holes (no glue...just a snug fit)
Reason I made my own was I have two little alcoves that these are made to fit in and I did longer and shorter lengths of dowelling - shorter for walking boots and longer for my big wellies (And I have some thin/shorter ones that were for then toddler DDs wellies -idea was to make the holes bigger and put in thicker dowelling -just haven't got round to it yet - or painting them... )

I'm deciding what to get for outdoor welly storage too. Ours are always filthy so bringing them inside inevitably means hoovering. We have a bit of a porch so can keep them there but I do worry about spiders - I'm arachnophobic. Is there any way of discouraging them? I did wonder if a wall mounted rack would be better but I guess not really.

wonkylegs · 14/03/2015 14:33

I like this one from garden trading as I thought it would double as a place for parcels to be left when we're not in.

Found this about naturally discouraging spiders "
Place natural spider deterrents in your yard. Spiders tend to stay away from eucalyptus, so planting a eucalyptus tree may keep these pests at bay. Spread diatomaceous earth, a powder made from the fossilized remains of ancient algae, around the yard, including any flower beds and rock piles, to kill spiders that get in the yard. You can buy diatomaceous earth at any garden supply store." Or "Apply a few drops of essential oil to problem areas to deter spiders. Lemon, garlic, rosemary, peppermint, clove, cedar and cinnamon oils are all thought to either repel spiders or kill them." The latter may also help with stinky wellys

AlmaMartyr · 14/03/2015 15:47

Essential oil is a good idea, can definitely try that. I also just came across Wellitops online which look great, and not too expensive so I may try those.
