Make a meadow out of lawn

I have a very sloping garden with small flat patio at bottom and small flat bit of lawn at top.

I would like to turn the sloping grass middle bit into a flowering meadow area. I'd rather not dig up the existing grass/ lawn there as it's in very good nick. Can I just scatter some wildflower seeds on top of the grass?

I don't know if just scattering on grass will be sufficient for wildflower seed to germinate, though I guess that's pretty much what would happen in the wild (and used to happen 60 or 70 years ago, before intensive agriculture).

Maybe 'spike' the ground with a big fork, or rake or scarify it a bit to get the seed closer to the soil.

Find a 'wild flower meadow' web site, or see what advice is given on the packet of seed. I think Sarah Raven is quite into natural stuff, so try her.

This isn't specific to your question, but it is an unusual and very attractive garden, and the 'Links' list has a lot of garden stuff in it, so you may find something to inspire you (though I haven't tried the links, so don't know if they all work):

If the existing lawn is in 'good nick' then you won't get a good meadow. You need to get up the "pretty" grass, and then put on a wildflower mix.
There's a company that does loads of different mixes according to your soil type, dryness of soil, etc. Try Yellow Flag Wildflowers for more info and advice.

If you don't want to dig up the lawn then best way forward would probably be to put in plug plants or bulbs. Probably best to check out what is most likely to be 'native' in your geographic area.
