Sorry about the bad picture quality...

Is this a mouse or a shrew?

Assuming you're UK or RoI, it's a mouse. A shrew would have a longer, pinker nose and little ears.

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 28/02/2015 22:56

I'm in the uk.

I have rabbits and guinea pigs so I guess their food has attracted them

It has a long nose doesn't it?

PeaceOfWildThings · 28/02/2015 23:04

That is a shrew.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/02/2015 23:08

That's a shrew. Not a mouse. I love shrews.

bluebump · 28/02/2015 23:09

It could be a field mouse, we've got one in our garden which loves stealing the guinea pigs food.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/02/2015 23:41

Ooh, you don't get shrews in Ireland, I never knew that before!

The ears are not shrew ears. The pic looks to have big ears, on top of the head - a shrew's ears are much smaller and more to the side. A shrew mostly eats slugs and grubs, insects and worms rather than cereals.

It wasn't scared of me and it kept running near me Grin

Looks like a house mouse! I think the nose looks longer due to a shadow or the stones.

Aren't field mouse more browny/golden brown?

PeaceOfWildThings · 01/03/2015 08:02

You could be right about the shadows. Our cat brings house mice in and they let me get very close. Shrews I've come across have been very fast to run away.

Tinofroses · 01/03/2015 08:10

Field mouse , looks cute.

GerundTheBehemoth · 01/03/2015 08:37

There are pygmy shrews in Ireland. No common or water shrews though. Other common 'British' mammals missing from Ireland are moles, short-tailed field voles, noctule bats and weasels.

TheSpottedZebra · 01/03/2015 09:23

Oh, Ireland have pygmy shrews? That's good, they are lovely!

GerundTheBehemoth · 01/03/2015 09:30

They are probably very happy pygmy shrews too, as they don't have to worry about being eaten by weasels Grin. Or by tawny owls - something else that Ireland doesn't have.

TheSpottedZebra · 01/03/2015 10:41

Ah, now I know a lot more about pygmy shrews than I did before Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 01/03/2015 13:54

Hmm now I'm doubting myself, I think maybe the pp was right who said that the stones etc are making the nose look longer. I found it hard to see, even enlarged, and the snout swung it was much too long and pointed for a mouse, but maybe that is just a stone/shadows. Looking again the eyes look too large for a shrew. The ears too, although shrews do sometimes stick their ears out a bit when listening. I am now thinking mouse.

GerundTheBehemoth · 01/03/2015 14:38

I forgot to say what I think it is, which is a mouse (big ears and eyes). Just not sure if house mouse or wood mouse (aka long-tailed field mouse). Size of eyes and ears suggests the latter but they usually look lighter and 'brighter' brown than this.

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 02/03/2015 01:20

I'm going to have loads in my garden aren't i?

SirVixofVixHall · 02/03/2015 13:43

Everyone has them in their garden. I have loads of voles, they are very very sweet.
