it's about 4m long but only 60cm deep, right next to the house and a nice sun trap in the afternoons.

what could I plant there? stems need to not be too woody as car bumper swings out a bit when reversing, so don't want scratches.

would like year round interest, is this possible with perennials?

am clueless Grin

Could you plant some climbers, to grow up the wall? Would that work?

NetballHoop · 27/02/2015 14:40

Not much to look at over winter, but we planted a vine in a similar position (between house and patio) and it has done well. Not enough for a bottle of wine, but still, home grown grapes!

I would, but there's a 3m long window in the middle. I love vines, but the only place it would have room to climb is on the boundary with our neighbour

What are you looking for in terms of interest? Colour, smell, evergreen? With a narrow strip like that, I would keep to the same plant as it will look it bit odd with bits here and there.
If you wanted low growing, then Periwinkle comes in lots of varieties but has really sweet blue flowers.

Lavender? Likes a sunny spot and is evergreen, smells nice and easy to maintain...

Convolvulus is another one that spreads nicely with white flower and silvery stems

If you want something taller then Choisya would grow a fair amount.

If you want something with year round interest then perennials are a no no, as they tend to die back in winter, but you could intersperse some in between the evergreens or use spring and summer flowering bulbs?

Agree with Tarrarra that perennials won't give you year round interest. Cistus shrubs are evergreen and like a sunny spot, with pink or white flowers. I like the ones with white flowers with a maroon spot. Some varieties are more compact than others but keep them all pruned after flowering for a good shape.

like the idea of evergreens with spring and summer bulbs.

there was lavender there when we bought house and it just got very leggy, woody and only had foilage on the outer inch. it also seemed to be where all the snails in the street gathered for a party!

not sure what I want, but I know its not baste earth!!

Erigeron karvinskianus is a useful little plant with daisy-like flowers that would grow nicely amongst your Cistus. It flowers all summer and will fill the available space.

You can get clematis that flower at different times of year, or perhaps a jasmine or evergreen honeysuckle. My mum has a gorgeous clematis on her South facing wall that has yellow bell shaped flowers and beautiful seed heads. I will try to find a pic.
