Scented rambling rose/clematis combo?

I'm going to plant a rambling rose to cover a bare 6ft fence at the end of our garden. I've been looking at the David Austin website but can't decide. I'd really like something quite fragrant and - I think - with pale coloured flowers. Not ridiculously vigorous though as I don't want it to pull the fence down.

I'm planning to grow a clematis through it as well so that I can have a longer flowering period, so any suggestions there too would also be great!

On Alan Titchmarsh's programme on great British Back Gardens on itv player, there is a bed and breakfast garden in York which features roses and clematis which you may find interesting.

I thought it interesting they used the larger flowering clematis: I suppose because the flowers are easier to see from a distance. Also they chose the darker coloured clematis with the lighter coloured roses. So for example clematis Jackmanii growing through Rambling Rector rose might do. Or the Countess of Wessex (pale white with pink edges) with Dr Du Jamain (maroon)

In theory there is no reason though why one couldn't grow a viticella clematis through a rose. For example clematis Polish Spirit (purple) with Sarah Fisher rose (orange).

I imagine a lot of feeding is needed.

Ooh I will have to look for that episode. Thanks funny person. I was thinking a dark clematis with pale rose as well. Will look at some of the varieties you mention as I'm not very knowledgable about different kinds.

Also nice, are the Alpina clematis, that are more delicate and therefore wouldn't overwhelm the rose. Alpina are often pale, but I think there are darker varieties.

Many years ago we had roses and clematis on the same fence, but had to scrap them after a few years as got out of control.

Yes Ferguson, I am a bit worried about it taking over, but I did identify a smaller rose that grows to a max of 10ft and seems to fulfil my other criteria so I think I might give that a try. Will check out your other suggestions too!

Sorry Funnyperson - I've just come back to this and seen your message. A belated thank you. The rose I've decided on is Phyllis Bide and is smaller than some others and unusually also repeat flowering. Will now peruse the clematis suggestions!

New dawn rose looks lovely by the way, but I think it could quickly swamp our small London garden.

New Dawn can be a bit vigorous. you need to take into account which way the fence faces and the flowering length/time of the climbers.

Take into account you might have to prune the clematis depending on which one you get which can be a thorny issue when growing through a rose. There are 3 pruning methods for these climbers - eg the spring flowering ones (montanas) don't need any pruning
