Please could you identify this weed?

And how to get rid of it? It isn't ugly but it's spreading fast. I've tried to dig it out but the underground stems are all linked and not at all easy to reach. I've ordered a sickle but wondered whether there is something else I should be doing.

I was going to say Heliotrope too.

Ooh I was close. Common butterbur is Petasites hybridus And winter heliotrope is Petasites fragrans And not technically native although naturalised here now.

Which I'd agree it looks a lot like.

Well, that's a novelty - a weed which doesn't grow prolifically in my garden!

Here they are, with the purple flowers.
