We're about to move into a new house with a huge garden that has been let go rather badly.
Among my other garden problems (there may be future threads!) there is a hedge out the front that appears to be leylandii, and an adjoining piece of hedge that is another type of brighter green conifer.
Both are quite ugly and I'd prefer to replace them with something native (which would also fit in better with the street and the area).
So. If I'm putting in a native hedge, I was thinking I should really try to do this in October/November (we're in the south-east) with whips to give it the best chance of establishing quickly. My current plan is to use mainly beech with some other hedgerow species interspersed - that way there is still a bit of winter privacy but it also has some diversity for bees, birds, etc.
Is that the best thing to do? Does anyone have helpful tips about how I should tackle this - timing, what I should plant, any planting techniques, soil prep etc?
