Anybody know what this is, please?

It came from Aldi & their tags are often wrong - this was supposed to be osmanthus but it isn't, is it?

It grows like stink & it's in quite a confined space so I'm always hacking it back randomly which tends to stop it flowering at the right time (last year there were flowers mid-winter, poor thing is confused)

Could it be a weigela?

Looks like a viburnum to me

wowfudge · 29/07/2014 20:23

My first thought was weigela - viburnum tends to have more ball shaped clusters of flowers. Yep, weigela.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 29/07/2014 20:23

oh yes it does!

\link{http://www.imageflora.com/image/viburnum-farreri-scented-pink-flowers-cluster-in-spring\this one, maybe?} (though those flowers are a more vivid pink)

Thank you, Gooner! Thanks

oh - like \link{http://www.djroger.com/pink_princess.html\this weigela}???

Confused

most weigelas seem to have shiny leaves but this one has the ribbed leaves like mine

Nah it's not weigela,I reckon Vib.bodnantense, have a sniff of the flowers, should smell nice.

MaudantWit · 30/07/2014 09:26

I think viburnum bodnantense too.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 30/07/2014 11:29

Yes they do smell nice (lovely in fact Smile)

Thank you so much - now I can find out how & when I should be cutting back!

Viburnum bodnantense.

Prune after flowering.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 31/07/2014 13:00

Thanks, all Smile

Apparently it is supposed to flower in the winter? So flowering now is wrong - do I still prune after flowering?

& do I prune the bits that don't have flowers - which are much the majority atm???

Lucky you! There is a mature one of these near our town hall and I had to craftily tear a wee bit off and take it to a gardener friend to ID it. It is very beautiful at a time when everything else in the garden is bleak.
