mine are the Achillea 'Summer Berries' that i grew from seed; the colours are lovely but

  1. it has grown loads taller than the 24 inches quoted (48 inches) and has all flopped over
  2. it absolutely STINKS...of pungent smelly dog
  3. yes if DOES attract pollinators , thank you Thompson & Morgan- unfortunatly , they all appear to be greenbottles and house flies Hmm- millions of the buggers

it is coming out at the end of the season

My raspberry patch has completely failed. A few plants about a foot high, that's all.
I guess it's time to replace them all, they are ten years old after all.

funnyperson · 31/07/2014 22:26

My sacred water lilies got slugged. Or eaten by things that can swim.

Callmegeoff · 31/07/2014 23:22

pasbeau Shock at your neighbour, did he do it on purpose or was he/she spraying something on his side.

My biggest disaster - nasturtians in hanging baskets, first black fly and now caterpillars. They are not likely to be hanging this year.

What are Rhaspberry beetles? Do they curl up the leaves? If so I have them too!

shobby · 01/08/2014 12:01

My sweet peas are pathetic, although I do feel partly responsible as I let them get potbound before planting out and as a result they are just sitting there getting mildew with minimal flowers.

My individual coloured (purple and lime green) zinneas are a bit pants too, they only seem to flower on single stems so look insubstantial although pretty. The whole patch just looks a bit bare as a result!

IScreamForIceCream · 01/08/2014 13:16

CuttedupPear my soft fruit also did nowt. It was all nice garden-centre bought stuff.
As I have just posted on another thread, Aldi have a load of soft fruit plants coming up --> www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/thursday-7th-august/product-detail/ps/p/fruit-collection-2/ - I think I will buy a pile. I have already got a couple of b/currants from a friend's healthy plant, otherwise I am probably starting from scratch.

Has anyone had experience of Aldi plants before? I have not tried them.

lazysummer · 02/08/2014 22:37

Pots of herbs, bought from the supermarket. The coriander went to seed straight away, then the slugs moved in. I have come back from holiday to find it all dead, apart from the mint, which may be salvageable with tlc. Garden centre bought parsley survived, but never flourished, and doesn't taste very nice.

13greentomatoes · 03/08/2014 13:04

Linerunner - re: patio tomato plants. Mine are tasteless too.

Glad it's not just me....

karatekimmi · 04/08/2014 07:48

Slugs had a great year, they ate all the pumpkin and butternut squash plants that I planted. We are in the process of putting in raised beds and I hoped they'd be finished months ago but mini kimmi likes to "help" so progress is slow!!

Felyne · 04/08/2014 07:58

Disappointment? My entire vege garden. I planted loads of seeds, but then went on holiday at a pretty crucial time so they missed out on needed care. I have had a few beetroot but that's it. I'm almost wondering if there's something wrong with the soil for everything to fail but there's a healthy crop of assorted weeds including bloody bindweed.

Ethelred those beetles are called, rather boringly, lily leaf beetles. Their larvae are disgusting and cover themselves in their own poo for defence while they munch through your plants.

LineRunner · 04/08/2014 16:59

13GreenTomatoes, they are going to be chutnied with chilli!

13greentomatoes · 04/08/2014 17:49

Linerunner- I'm thinking of doing the same....Sad
My.beetroot is tasty though Smile

Callmegeoff · 05/08/2014 08:43

Iscream I love Aldi plants, my Hostas and Fuchsias from there are flourishing.

Why did I plant a morning glory to climb up a rose, it's strangling the rose and there are no bloody flowers!

teacherwith2kids · 05/08/2014 08:54

Carrots. 3 sowings later, 4 carrots. Never failed before.

Oh, and the climbing beans. The only ones to have survived chose to climb up the semi-cultivated branble plant and are thus inaccessible to anyone not wearing full body armour....

IScreamForIceCream · 05/08/2014 10:10

Thanks geoff - guess I am off to Aldi then on Thurs to buy ALL THE FRUIT BUSHES.

I cannot wait. My 2015 fruit harvest is going to be bountiful Grin

itsnothingoriginal · 08/08/2014 20:20

My trees - I really need them to grow and give me back a bit of privacy from the neighbours but they've looked pants this year and one has barely grown at all (a whitebeam) and the leaves are already falling off Sad

On the plus side my hollyhocks are looking beautiful at the moment!!

MrsJohnDeere · 09/08/2014 10:01

Disappointments:
Lettuce - all eaten by slugs and birds. Tried in various locations. Haven't had a single leaf.

Carrots. Sown thousands. Successfully grown 3.

French beans. Not given up on them yet but still no flowers (but runner beans doing fantastically well).

Morning glory. Watering twice a day (where possible) as they keep drooping, but went away for a few days and they died.

Sweet peas that I planted have been a bit meh, but ones from last year have self-seeded and have been amazing (but in all the wrong places).

dreamingofsun · 10/08/2014 13:49

my carrots haven't done well either, or beetroot or corn.

raspberries have been amazing and also lettuce and courgettes of course
