what can I plant at this time of year?

My lovely salad crop has been utterly destroyed by insects / caterpillars. I still have some seeds left, so have planted these up in pots and hope to have more success. But I'm left with a patch of bare earth in the veggie patch, although some rosemary, sage and mint at the back are doing okay.

What can I plant at this time of year? I could just leave the space empty, or maybe plant some more herbs to turn the veggie patch into a herb garden. Is it too late for bedding plants to add some colour? Or some perennials (give up on growing food!). Potatoes? Our neighbours have a great crop from potato bags Envy, but they planted them weeks ago.

We have a heavy clay soil and only partial sun, but in the middle of the day so the ground gets some decent warmth. All advice appreciated!

If you're happy with colour and plants, just get yourself to your nearest garden centre and buy whatever plugs take your fancy. In the past 3 weeks I have planted a fuschia, petunias, a gerbara and cherry gauda, all seem to be doing well and coming on very quickly. I buy whatever is cheap and bright!

Hayloft plants, Sarah Raven, Thompson & Morgan, various other online suppliers all have reduced plug plants on sale for planting now.

What about some lovely native wildflowers? Fox

Plug plants as already mentioned. Mixed with lavenders, fox gloves, cat nip all great for bees.

Brilliant - plug plants sound good and thank you for the tips about reductions. A weekend project beckons! Some bee-friendly things would be nice as well.

Got a tray of mixed plants from B and Q the other weekend all supposed to be good for bees - salvia, catnip, foxglove, lavender and a couple of others - seemed like quite good value

I've just planted out the pumpkin seeds the DC sown - which are now young plants - I'm/DC are hoping we get some fab ones in time for Halloween!

Didn't think of pumpkins - a longer term plan :-)
