Is it safe?

I noticed a bit back that when we emptied our caravans system with the steriliser in it, that it ran onto the vegetable plot growing onions. Now they are ready to harvest but I am suddenly worried that they won't be safe to eat. Am I just been a worry wart or is there some fact behind my anxiety? Hope you can help quickly as hubby is planning on using them for tea!

What does it say on the packet of the steriliser? I don't think I'd want to use them either, tbh!

We use the boots steriliser and it says active ingredients sodium hypochlorite and sodium chloride. It was diluted but still?

Well sodium chloride is just salt, and sodium hypochlorite isn't far removed from salt - if there was too much salt in the system then your onions probably wouldn't have grown (salt poisons soil for many plants) - and if it did its job of sterilising properly then there shouldn't have been any nasty infectious agents left, and presumably the onions will be cooked so it probably is ok to use them although I think I'd still pass, given the choice!

Thanks! I have been trawling the net trying to find stuff and I found something that said about hypochlorites break down rapidly into non toxic compounds when exposed to sunlight. Also my hubby is generally right about things and he said it will be o.k. I know he will be really, Really miffed if I refuse to let him cook them! I would rather pass too!...

Discovered E.P.A.gov that says they are used as pesticides in U.S including post harvest, seed, and soil treatment. Also something about safety levels which are 5.25% to 12.5% (something about labelling or informing people)for hypochloride and 65% to70% for chloride. Our container says contains 2% hypo' and 16.5% chloride. Add to that the dilutedness it should be even less again! I found about reverting to salts too and also about the product remaining on food and posing no known hazard!
I think I will eat his onions! he will be pleased (especially if I don't tell him about the worry!)
