plants for shady wet soil?

we have a rectangular area in the back garden where the soil is very heavy, clay and always damp even though we've attempted to improve the drainage and added soil improver.

there's a japonica in there now which we moved and it seems to like it there much better than where it was. what else can we put in that would like that type of soil/position?

I have a similar border in my garden, never gets any sun and is heavy clay soil. I have a few things planted that seem to do ok - violets, hardy geraniums, crocosmia, aliums.

Will watch with interest what others suggest ...

I have that exact corner and have grown successfully various types of hardy geraniums, astrantia, pulmonarias, primroses, lysimachia (don't know variety), sedums and crocosmia

We have ferns and shamrock growing well in our damp clay corner.

I miss my damp and shady spot, it's difficult to grow the bright and cheerful Limnanthes (Poached Egg Plants) without one.

Ferns, hostas, astilbe, dogwood, hellebores, sedums, mahonia and lily of the valley all coping with similar conditions in my garden.

Alchemilla mollis will grow pretty much anywhere too.

good ideas here, will get some ferns, we have one already but its happy where it is, might see how easy it would lift out for replanting.
