DP tree surgeon says possibly a bay tree but hard to tell without a better pic

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 01/06/2014 21:48

I thought bay too. What's the bark like?

upupupandaway · 01/06/2014 21:54

Rub the leaves, a bay leaf is unmistakeable.

DimeBar · 01/06/2014 22:39

Thanks for responding.

Very surprised as Bay tree wasn't what I was expecting to hear, I thought it was going to be some kind of flowering/fruiting tree.

I shall go and smell the leaves tomorrow, if they don't have a 'bay' leaf smell I shall be back with better photos.

PRUNUS LAUROCERASUS ????

wowfudge · 02/06/2014 07:57

OP - take another picture, this time showing the whole tree so we can see the shape and size. I don't think that's a bay because it has fruit on it by the looks of things and the leaves are quite dark or shiny enough.

Monkeyandanimal · 02/06/2014 08:04

Is it not some sort of apple or medlar type thing?

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 02/06/2014 12:28

It doesn't look like an apple tree to me - apple leaves are serrated.

Some kind of laurel, is it evergreen?

wowfudge · 02/06/2014 14:05

It could be a pear or quince.

WowOoo · 02/06/2014 14:15

It looks like a strawberry tree. Google images for it and see if it's the same.

If the fruits look like hairy, red/pink and spiky balls it could be that.

DimeBar · 02/06/2014 20:19

Oh wow, thanks for the responses.

I've taken some more photos. Sorry I took them before coming back to thread, so I don't have one of the whole tree.

Definitely not bay, as there is no smell to the leaves.

Could be a quince. I will google other suggestions

I don't think it is a strawberry tree, the leaves look a lot thinner than those pictured.

Medlar could be in the running too. Off to search more images.

Thank you all.

Plum or damson? I dont really know, but the leaves look like my plum tree from lidl. Or it could be a pear tree. I bought both sticks at the same time and have forgotten which is which.

WowOoo · 03/06/2014 14:22

Let us know when you know.

Hope it's something with perfectly edible fruit.
