What is this big grassy bush in my garden?

Can anyone help me identify it? It might be a ribbon or umbrella bush. It's got long grassy leaves that are v long now. It's our first spring in this house and I am a garden novice. The grassy bushes were cut right back over winter. Today I read something online and just lobbed all the ends offas the blades were super long and covering other shrubs. The garden looks terrible and I'm worried I've killed the bush.

I can only describe it as having growing long grassy leaves which grow up and out. It's lovely but when too long it flops down. It's v common as I've seen it in many other gardens and I'm embarrassed I don't know what it is and how to prune it!

A photo would help cheeky as it's difficult to know what you mean from your description.

This is the bush and I have several.

Looks like Carex. It's an annoying weed. Dig it out or it will self seed everywhere.

Weed?! I thought it was an ornamental grass bush. I've got about 4 of these bushes. Should I just dig them all up? What can I plant in its place as its going to leave an ugly gap?

They could be daylilies.

Ferguson · 20/05/2014 19:53

Isn't it too SHINY for Carex?

If it is daylilies it should flower very soon shouldn't it?

OH NO! You have lots of hairy bittercress in there as well I think, thin seedpods will POP! everywhere! And is that cleavers there as well?

Re the grass/bush: try and get in close, and dig up a bit from the edge, as the roots should give clues to what it might be. Then if you can, post a photo of the roots.

Don't dig it out just yet, anyway.

Thank you everyone. I will take some more photos tomorrow. Can the bittercress be eaten? And how can I stop it spreading? It seems to be fairly contained at the moment.

I'm uploading another photo of the bush. It's about 80cm high and looks like a giant green spider plant.

I need to google bittercress and find out what all the fuss is.

Bittercress: No fuss I don't think, but it can be a nuisance weed. And I don't think can be eaten. Starts off as small white flowers, leaves flat to the ground at first, then gets taller as it gets more confident! Easy to pull out when in flower, but once seed is ripe it showers out if you touch it.

Is that a white hellebore? Thought it was at first, but now doubtful. And what's the golden bush at the back?

Don't know about the second picture, but it seems harmless at the moment! Might be couple of small willowherb seedlings further back; if they get pink flowers later, pull them out as they make fluffy seeds that float everywhere. Top right, could be hardy geranium (cranesbill) possibly.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/05/2014 19:53

First one looks like sedge to me (that is carex I think?)

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/05/2014 19:55

Second one looks like a rock plant of some sort maybe?

cheekygeeky · 21/05/2014 21:06

Thank you everyone. I'm really embarrassed about my lack of knowledge, but having spent all week in my garden I find I'm becoming slightly obsessed with it.

Don't be embarrassed, we all have to start somewhere and no-one knows everything. I have been gardening for years but learn something new every day. The second picture could be some sort of campanula but not really sure, I also think the grassy bush looks like lillies. Hairy bittercress is edible, it apparently tastes peppery, a bit like rocket - not tried it myself though.
