what is wrong with these plants?

I am hoping one of you experts will tell me what is wrong in my veg patch.

Alkaline spoil, large veg patch, tends to dry out.

I planted 2 shop bought tomato plants, plus 3 that I have grown on from tiny plugs. I planted them 2-3 weeks ago. Then it went chilly. All the plants have not grown at all, and have a very yellowish tinge.

At the same time I planted a row of runner bean seeds. They finally came up this week, and the pairs of new leaves are all yellow. The peas and mange tout next to them have come up lovely and green.

Both tomatoes and beans were planted in prepared ground, with a trench of home made compost.

One of my books suggests iron, which is more common in an alkaline area?
Or is it that they were cold?

They look slightly happier after 2 days of warmth.

How can I perk them up? (and make them grow!)

They are too cold i think. Peas and mange tout can tolerate colder temperatures, beans and tomatoes need it warmer at night. I'm on the South Coast and my phone was saying it was 4 degrees last night.

Can you make a little tent to cover them at night with fleece or something if temperatures are still going low at night ?

you are probably right, it was warm when I planted them and then the weather went cold again.

I can't really fleece them, just hope the warmer weather will cheer them up

I did this - warm weekend at beginning of May, planted out my tomatoes, it went cold and then windy. They did look pretty unhappy. The last few days they've perked up a bit. I've given them plenty of water and a bit of food.

I'd just keep an eye and if they don't grow get rid, but they will probably be ok.

they will be alright once they get settled :)
