What hedge will survive next to neighbours conifers :(

I planted some cherry laurel to create a hedge along all of our boundary. The ones close to next doors conifers have not survived Sad

Any suggestion as to what hedging will cope?

Sadly, the conifers will just be leeching all the moisture and nutrients from the soil so not sure much will survive next to them. I think you might have to find another option than hedging plants unfortunately. Maybe you could grow some plants in large containers in that area of your garden or would it be an option to put up a pergola with climbers growing over it to add a nice feature against the hedge?

When we had this problem with a neighbours huge conifer hedge we considered all those ideas but the said neighbours then chopped hedge down Shock and it took ages to improve the soil in that part of my garden to actually grow anything else there!

In front of my conifer hedge I've got Euonymus, box, Skimmia japonica, Choisya, Lonicera nitida and Pittosporum, all growing perfectly happily. Any of these could make a hedge (actually Skimmia is probably too small). I think you would just have to be really conscientious about watering through the first couple of years until they had become established.

How tall are next door's conifers?

RandomMess · 14/05/2014 18:38

Not very tall about 3' at a guess, I've found a site that says box and holly. Guess lots and lots of fertiliser etc and lots of watering for a looong time may help?

It's in front garden - we're on busy road, can't use pots they'lll get pinched!

If its only 3' I would be quite surprised if it was the reason that the cherry laurel died...

I agree - was envisioning towering 30 footers!! I would try again with some of the alternatives suggested but step up feeding and watering.

RandomMess · 15/05/2014 18:13

All the other ones survived and have flourished - the ones near the conifers are dead or failing to thrive. However the conifers used to be much taller and have been lopped off at some point Confused

I may try something different next time though!

If they've been lopped off their roots have probably gone all the way underneath and the new plants are being starved and don't have sufficient water.

I would dig down on (or close to) the boundary and cut through all the roots coming through and then try again.
