Cut ivy in fence or remove all together?

We have out of control ivy growing on one side of the fence in our tiny garden. I hate it and would rather be rid of it but it has damaged the fence and would mean replacing the whole fence. Should I just get it trimmed right back instead?

I'd also like to paint the fence panels cream/pale sage at some point which would not be possible with dead ivy left on the wall presumably

I made the mistake of planting ivy against a fence. The best I can do now is keep trimming it back, but when the fence is replaced soon I will be getting rid of the ivy.

If you pull the ivy off the fence you will be left with marks all over where the ivy has clung to and you'll never get rid. We replaced the fence (albeit not before time as it was falling down).
Had to saw the ivy off at the bottom and soak it in glyphosate to stop it regrouping. Hateful stuff in the wrong place, great for the birds and bees in the right one!

Yes, I have already tried to kill my ivy off by sawing through the main stems, but it refuses to die! I'm going to have to use powerful weed killer and dig it out.

I think it will be too expensive to replace all the fence panels - I suppose we could just make do with cheaper panels for now and just replace the ivy damaged ones..
