Sorry for being unclear.

funnyperson · 09/05/2014 19:33

loads of places:

plantsforshade
hardyplantsociety
thompsonandmorgan
spaldingbulbs
primrose
vanhage
woottensofwenhasten
jaquesarmand
telegraph gardenshop
ebay
clareaustin
david austin
peter beales

etc etc

Michael - I assume because their prices are extortionate!

Karbea · 09/05/2014 19:42

Exactly, I'd read on here that they are more expensive than other sites.

Do you have a decent nursery near to you? I found one that is really good, stocks the plants I like, and is about 20 miles away through The Plant Finder on the RHS website. I went and bought a load of things a month or so ago and they were far happier coming home in the car than coming through the post or via a courier. And of course I could choose really good specimens. That said I do buy some things online - from a variety of places. I tend to google a plant I like and then see what else they sell to see if there are enough to make an order worthwhile. I haven't been disappointed yet, so lucky dip works for me.

Yes I must admit I'm with bearleigh to a certain extent because buying from the local nursery keeps the local economy and community going also.
That said, poundland and lidl often have very good plant bargains.

Crocus is more expensive than elsewhere and the exact same stuff can be found cheaper if you look on

primrose

which will also often give you a price comparison if you type in a plant name.

Also, it stops the local nursery form becoming an internet ghost. This is what has happened to Jaques armand which used to have the most amazing selection of bulbs and still has a good selection online and shows at shows but the reality of the nursery is that half the land has now been sold off and the bulbs are no longer stocked locally but in some internet warehouse somewhere.

Like anything, waiting a bit will often bring the price down, for example Sarah Raven is selling her dahlia tubers 30% off which is a brilliant bargain as its certainly not too late to plant them out and her tubers are fantastic.

Agree that local nurseries are best really. Ask around for recommendations.
