Advice on growing raspberries and blackberries in a small raised bed

Hi, We have space in a sunny spot for a small raised bed- prob 3ft by 2 ft.

I'd like to grow raspberries and blackberries but have found the info on the internet about canes etc a bit confusing.

Can anyone explain to me in clear easy to understand language??
Thanks!

I grow both. The blackberries would be harder in a bed as you describe as they tend to grow long and straggly (think bramble bushes). To start with, I think I would be inclined to stick with raspberries.

I grow a several different types which fruit at different times. Mine are planted about 6 inches apart - in well fertilised soil. Some grow up a wall and some up bamboo canes. They grow very fast and send up suckers everywhere so you have to be on top of them and make sure they are pruned and tied to the canes.

You also need to make sure you read about the varieties you buy. One variety I have fruits on last years' growth whereas another dies each year and the canes grow up again. Clearly you need to know which are which (although the dead ones are pretty obvious).

If you do go for blackberries, consider a thornless variety as brambles are nasty things.

Tayberries and loganberries might be a better alternative to blackberries.
