Don't laugh but are courgettes small marrows?

I probably should know this, and I did try Google but the answers were contradictory. So, are they? If I leave my courgettes will they turn into marrows?

Yes I think so...

PlumpPartridge · 06/05/2014 14:14

Yes, they will. I went to a Halloween marrow party once - they forgot about courgettes and by the time they found them, they'd become marrows!

AlpacaLypse · 06/05/2014 14:15

No idea but have often wondered this myself. So, dedicated gardening mnetters, that's now two of your fellow vipers who need to be put out of their misery!

BuzzardBird · 06/05/2014 14:15

Yes If the continue to grow they grow into marrows and then you have to get Dierdre to give you her recipe Grin

In French courge= marrow. So courgette=small marrow.

PlumpPartridge you went to a Halloween Marrow Party? That's stopped me dead in my tracks. Are these commonplace?

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 06/05/2014 14:23

Pumpkins are so 2013.

Been marrows here for ages.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 06/05/2014 15:16

Thanks for the replies - wasn't expecting many. Glad to hear it's not just me who wondered about this!

Loving the idea of a Halloween marrow party Grin

Who is Deirdre?

mrsrochester Grin

I've only ever been to one! We dressed up in Halloween costumes, carved marrows into marrow-lanterns, had a marrow-rolling competition (we had to roll them down a narrow hallway using our heads) - you know, all the usual stuff Wink

IdealistAndProudOfIt · 12/05/2014 09:22

Kind of.

Originally they were the same plant, so courgettes were baby marrows and vice versa. But there has been a lot of selective breeding and now you are better off getting the correct seeds for the type you want, they will grow and taste better. That's not to say they're not edible as each other, just not as nice.

Sorry late to the party.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 12/05/2014 15:12

Don't worry about being late, that's very helpful :)

I had a vague fancy for stuffed marrow, but as it seems I'll be the only one eating it I'll probably just stick to courgettes.

You can get marrow varieties so you can eat when immature. You should eat summer squash before seeds start to form otherwise they are past their best.
