Help me to identify this plant - I should know it really

This is a bit embarrassing as usually I'm the one identifying plants on here!

Anyway here it is - it's a twining climber, with ivy shaped leaves but it is not a clinging plant.

I had thought at first that it was wisteria because of the length of the new shoots and the apparent flower heads at the tips. However now the leaves have emerged and they are very shiny, dark green and look like ivy.

The thing is growing great guns and I think I will have to remove it wholesale as the client whose house it grows on thinks that it is the same monster that was taking over the wall when they bought the house. It has layered itself about a bit as well - joy!

Can you post a better pic, very hard to see much from that.
Are you sure its not an Ivy? Some species don't cling but cant think of another climber with ivy shaped leaves which are so shiny.

I can't get better pic til next week.
Here's a close up though.

Very smooth new shoots with a ribbed surface.

i'd say some sort of ivy too.

And this is the new shoot that made me think it was wisteria before the leaves had come out.

Leaves look like Ivy, the stems look rather thick for Ivy though.
If it is layering itself also makes me think its Ivy.

Do you use Twitter? Some of my gardening friends do and post their plant queries on there.

Could it be Bryony? Found some in my garden yesterday and can't believe how much growth it had put on in a few days!

Catsmamma · 01/05/2014 08:31

i have an old ivy on a garden wall....some of the stems are like my wrist.

ldt87 · 01/05/2014 08:33

Watching with interest as this is in my garden and grows like crazy!

CuttedUpPear · 01/05/2014 08:51

ldt87 could you post any pictures of yours here for us to compare?

Yes it's black bryony, full marks to whojamaflip.

here

I've had it once before but didn't remember what it looked like young. Dammit, must get back there with poison.

That's interesting, haven't seen that before.
I didn't think the stems looked like Ivy.
Why do you need to poison it?
Looks quite exotic.

CuttedUpPear · 01/05/2014 19:46

It's incredibly vigorous and highly poisonous.

It probably has its place in the English countryside but not in this particular garden!
