Will these survive? Mint plant divided. Sorry, long....ish.

A few days ago, I made up a container of different types of mint, planted in individual pots, then put into a large container, IYSWIM, as part of a project from my gardening book.

Anyway, 2 of the 5 plants didn't survive, so I went back to the garden centre to replace them.

Unfortunately, the little containers of the mint had gone and had been replaced with bigger pots, which I knew wouldn't fit into the now empty 2 remaining pots in the container, so I bought one to split it in half to fit both pots.

So I cut away the straggly roots at the bottom of the plant and pulled it apart, cutting the wood-y bit which connected both sides of the plant, and pulled off most of the compost surrounding the root. I then put new compost and grit inside the current pots along with the newly separated plants, and watered them. What has just occurred to me is that the wood-y bit (main root? Yes, I am that much of a novice...) was the plant's lifeline and the plants might die. Eek..

Will they survive separately with the main root(?) cut, or will the fresh compost keep them going as separate plants? Please advise...

It's really hard to kill mint! I think it will be fine....

Yes mkmjimmy is right - I foolishly put mint in the flowerbed 8 yrs ago (still in the pot to stop it spreading) and I think this is the first year on weeding that bed that there wasn't any mint to remove.

It might look a bit limp for a while and then be fine.

I also put mint in a stupid place, moved it and keep finding it springing up again!

Thanks all, I'll keep an eye on it :)

It would be a shame if it/they didn't survive as the container looks really pretty with the different types
of mint in it.

Especially the mint for my mojitos....thanks again :)

Time will tell. 'Tis the joy of learning how to grow stuff!

You'll be glad it's all in pots. We had enough mint to open a mojito bar in our last house.

Mint is pretty much indesctructible. as the others said, whatever you do don't plant it in open ground Grin

Sounds like a lovely project.
