I am a first time allotment holder. I got some seed pototoes two weeks ago but due to Easter hols only got down to plot yesterday. When I took out of packet they seemed rather rubbery but kids were excited to plant some we went ahead. I still have half to put in today. Do u think they will still grow or should I play it safe and get some new ones ? Thanks

So glad to see this. For the first time dh is going to grow potatoes in bags. Neither o f has any clue how to go about it. We went to get some seed pots today and like the previous poster found they were soft, so we didnt get them. So these would of been ok ? And how many to put in each bag. The bags are 40 ltr bags

Hi mummylin,I take it you have got potato bags ?if so then put 3 in the bottom layer & 2 or 3 in the next layer.
Have a look at this.

Yes that's right , they are bags. So is that all you put in , just half a dozen spuds ? But in two layers. Do you put the in all at the same time or do you wait fora week or so until you put the top layer ?

mummylin, I grow potatoes in bags and they're a great success - in fact I have space in the garden to sow them normally but have given up in favour of the bags.

I've never sown in 2 layers though - interesting. I'll check out that link from Gooner. Fwiw, I just put a few inches of compost in each bag, nestle 3 seed potatoes on it and cover up with another few inches. As the foliage grows, add more compost to cover it completely. Keep doing this till the bag is full. Make sure they're well-watered, especially at first; they can get very dry in the middle of the bag if you don't watch it.

They will flower, you then harvest them (ie tip the bag out!) at the appropriate time according to the potato variety.
It's very satisfying Grin

Doh, should have looked at that link before posting! Fascinating that they reckon you don't even need to add the compost in stages, just plant the 2 layers and fill the bags right up.

I have 6 bags, might try half my way and half the new way...
