I've just had several newly germinated seedling die with 'damping off'
. I gather you used to be able to buy a copper based product called Chesham's or similar but it was withdrawn from use so the only thing you can you now is a Bayer Garden product called Fruit and Vegetable Disease Control- but I've read that it isn't considered that effectual. Not that I can find a local outlet that sells it, anyway!
Bit despondent, actually. Back to the drawing board! I hatched my seeds in a heated propagator but the thing is, you need a warm and damp environment to make the seeds germinate so that of course encourages fungal growth- which then attacks the newly germinated plants.
I've been reading about what 'experts' do (apart from lament the withdrawal of Chesham's) which seems to be to attempt to germinate seeds in desert like conditions
. I have been using those new coir plugs which I assume are as sterile as seedling compost? And tap water, not rain water. Am at a loss!
