Herbs for a shady spot?

I'm wondering if there are any herbs that will grow in a shady spot? I've just had a wander around the garden centre and come away empty handed. I fancied something like rosemary, which would look a bit shrub-y too. Any ideas very gratefully received!

I'd be interested in any ideas too! I have a partly shaded area where I'll be planting some herbs, but I think it'll mainly be things like mint and lemon balm, as they can tolerate some shade. I love lavender, rosemary etc but they need lots of sun (in my limited experience anyway!) so when I get around to it, they'll be getting planted in a sunny spot.

I'd add parsley and chervil to mint and lemon balm.

I grow lovage and sorrel in part shade. Neither is like rosemary but lovage is very statuesque, and neither is often available to buy in the shops. Both make wonderful additions to soups and salads. There is a red-veined sorrel which is extremely pretty and can be grown from seed.

Rosemary will not like the shade - no Mediterranean herbs will thrive in those conditions.

I second lemon balm.

Rosemary has grown on the shady bed round the side of next door's house for at least 10 years as it was mature when we moved in 8 years go.

However all the mints will grow pretty much anywhere - when you plant them out though leave them in big pots and sink those into the ground otherwise they will spread like billy-o.

Thanks for the ideas, much appreciated!
