New thread for the potting shed crowd using Rhubarb's rose suggestion and Squeaky's quote for the new title.

Spring is underway with promises of summer in our gardens big and small.

totally forgot that ir's nearly chelsea time, maybe I will manage to go this year.

I didn't have a buquet, but only had a registry office affair. my dad quickly got some roses from a corner shop, though, dh would never thought of buying flowers. I don't ghink he ever gave me flowers tbh should I ltb?

mousmous · 27/04/2014 13:10

sorry for the spelling, on phone on the ayground

nightshade1 · 27/04/2014 13:46

yes, just worked out it was 9 weeks yesterday. Lots to do and I need to stop eating to fit in my dress, but its all very exciting here!

pogglebonkgeoff · 27/04/2014 17:32

Ooh a wedding nightshade how exciting :)

Dh never buys me flowers either mousmous

I spent all afternoon potting on pretty much everything in the greenhouse. That will teach me to sow so many seeds at once.

The garden is sodden again, the water table must still be very high. Dh tried to dig down to drain it but we seem to be on a deep seam of clay.

HumphreyCobbler · 27/04/2014 19:42

I am going to Hampton Court on the 9th. Pleeeeeeease can some of you go so that I can meet you?

nightshade, how exciting that you are getting married! I do love a wedding. Wish I could have mine again.

The half dug pond is full of water that will have to be drained out (some defunct land drain pipes are still feeding into it) before it can be finished.

funnyperson · 27/04/2014 19:44

Lexi came round and informed me of the following

The gone over tulips are in fact alliums in bud
3 of the healthier looking plants are in fact weeds
Raspberries grow to 5 foot therefore may not do in the vegetable trough
The fennel seedlings are in fact the missing cosmos purity seedlings

Thank goodness for gardening friends Thanks

I had 3 lots of wedding flowers: the white bouquet (roses) the red bouquet (roses) and the pink bouquet (yes, you guessed it: roses)

mousmous · 27/04/2014 19:46

9th hmmm. might be able to. would have to tag along dc and be back for the school run at 4 though (on the other side of town).

Rhubarbgarden · 27/04/2014 20:06

Oh funny that did make me smile, sorry! But you get the prize for wedding flowers - three bouquets! Fabulous!

I'm going to Chelsea on 24th May. Anyone else?

No gardening this weekend. Wall to wall children's parties.

LushAndVerdant · 27/04/2014 20:07

I will double check the dates of HC but the Sunday is (all things being equal) probably the best bet for me.

I'm glad Lexi was able to help you, funnyperson.

Lexilicious · 27/04/2014 20:20

!

You and me both!

NotAnotherNewNappy · 27/04/2014 21:38

Rhubarb - I'm going to Chelsea on the 23rd, so I'll just miss you.

Castle - I love the bouquet idea and my garden would be prettier if I had followed the same scheme. I had huge white roses, with purple/lilac freesias, ivy and eucalyptus. My garden is all purple/pink, I need more white to freshen it up.

Bertha - My alliums have suffered too - it's my first year with them so I didn't realise how much. Of the 6 different types I planted, only the purple sensation have flowers (and they are sensational!). Should I pull the blind ones up or see what happens next year?

I have a Sore bum again tonight as I spent hours in the garden yesterday - appearing to do very little. Mainly weeding the borders and mulching with bark. Worthy jobs but I couldn't believe how long it took.

DH finally got the quince rootball out so I dug that bit of border over and planted a yellow hollyhock. He says we're not allowed to plant any of our own shrubs, ever. Luckily, he didn't notice the viburnum tinus I put in.

I do share his fear of putting something in only to have to dig out woody roots a few years down the line - but nice shrubs, in the right place, really fill a space. annuals or perennials are so much more work and don't keep the weeds down as much.

Today was more fun as I planted some peas (onward and mange tout), made a strawberry patch (in a shady raised bed, so fingers crossed) and potted on my cosmos seedlings. The cosmos are from seed that Rake sent me, so thank you Rake (NC?!).

I made DH sprinkle evergreen on the lawn. Anybody else used this before?

I was v disappointed by the lack of tulips in GW. I think Monty is deliberately flirting with you lot ;-)

I am going to give the beechgrove garden a go - if I ever get the DC to sleep...

funnyperson · 27/04/2014 21:38

Yes I had 3 lots of flowers due to the civil ceremony, religious ceremony and going away outfits being of different colours. There were other flowers mixed in with the roses and the florist was a local family run shop, and they charged an arm and a leg as I recall though the flowers were very nice.

Someone on this thread mentioned they had home grown flowers on the tables at the wedding breakfast and I like that idea. Perhaps times have changed but the very formal bouquet seems a bit outdated now. Far nicer to have field flowers like bluebells and forgetmenots on the tables.

funnyperson · 27/04/2014 21:41

Your sister's bouquet sounds really nice castle

LushAndVerdant · 27/04/2014 21:47

I am hoping for a dry spell tomorrow in which to sow parsley and other seeds.

My diary for July is a bit messy at the moment, but I have pencilled in HC for the Sunday. I will probably do what I did last year and buy the cheaper afternoon ticket, but the difference this year is that I will remember to take my wheelie basket for my loot from the end of show sell-off!

funnyperson · 27/04/2014 21:56

The erythroniums in Gardeners World were enchanting and just perfect under the magnolia tree and did anyone else think the cameraman had done a really good job? I agree Monty's irregular box balls are very nice and get better every year. No pun intended.

I mowed the lawn but got in very little gardening today. The sweet peas are in desperate need of planting out. The front garden is in need of a planting plan.

But the masses of bluebells in the local woods this year are better than ever.

funnyperson · 27/04/2014 21:57

I might join you......

LushAndVerdant · 27/04/2014 22:14

It would be lovely if you could, funnyperson. We could eat ice cream and dangle our sore feet in Long Water, like we did last year.

Inspired by a lovely display in our college garden, I planted some erythroniums years ago, under a fatsia japonica in the bed that I later sacrificed to extend the patio. They soon fizzled out, but the beautiful display on GW made me quite wistful.

Rhubarbgarden · 27/04/2014 23:03

It was me who had home grown flowers on the tables as favours. I grew them all from seed in miniature terracotta pots, and it was a nerve racking time - would enough germinate? Would they flower in time? Would the caterers water them in the morning as they had promised?! They made me happy though.

I'm going to a wedding in Wales next weekend actually. I bought some frivolous turquoise shoes for it this morning; they have floppy corsages on the toes.

LushAndVerdant · 27/04/2014 23:26

Ooh. Can you do a link to the shoes, Rhubarb? They sound gorgeous. I have just bought some dresses and was very tempted by some shoes, too, but didn't buy them as I have oddly-shaped feet ::attractive:: so never buy shoes by mail order.

Rhubarbgarden · 27/04/2014 23:40

Frivolous shoes

They will make a nice (and rare) change from my wellies.

LushAndVerdant · 28/04/2014 00:05

They are gorgeous! Even my party shoes look terribly drab in comparison.

Castlelough · 28/04/2014 00:08

Ooh nice shoes Rhubarb! Grin

Castlelough · 28/04/2014 00:10

Wish I could go to either Chelsea or HC this year while my brother still lives in London. He is probably going to have moved home by summer 2015.

Rhubarbgarden · 28/04/2014 07:56

Thank you! They are surprisingly comfy as well.

Castle - you must come over for one of them then!
