we have a new porch and next to it we have some trellis on the corner wall (so a tall thin bit of trellis on one wall and then a convex corner with a tall thin bit of trellis on the other wall too - does that make sense?). I want to grow something up this trellis (think we might paint the trellis too) but as it is above tarmac it will have to grow from a pot/planter. Any suggestions? don't want anything too bushy as it is only about 30cm wide trellis on each wall and next to the door, don't want anything with too good a grip as the wall is part of the house so don't want anything which might damage the brickwork. It does get sun later in the day. one wall faces south and one west.

Thanks

I had a jasmine that I had in a planter trough for around 6 years where I previously lived - it was very hardy, had very pretty white flowers & spread extensively up our shed.

I have clematis in a pot by my back door and have lots of lovely flowers in late spring. it doesn't cling to the wall at all, just the trellis. There's lots of different varieties so you can chose colour and flowering times vary too.

I've got a passion flower that grows nicely in a pot and up some trellis.

Honeysuckle might work? I'm only a beginner gardener but it doesn't stick to walls, more winds round things like clematis.

Maid of Kent rose by David Austin has been growing in a pedestal pot in my garden for about 8 years now. It has thin lax branches that need to be tied to a trellis support.

ooh I forgot climbing roses, I always think of roses just as bushes.

Cimbers often prefer deep pots as their roots need this. When you choose your pot bear this in mind. :-)

thanks tropicalfish - I have a really very tall pot purely by chance because the one I liked happened to be so that is lucky.

The climbing hydrangea is lovely. I have one that withstood a flood this winter so it must be quite tough! www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/climbers/clematis/hydrangea-anomala-subsp-petiolaris/itemno.RH30000456/
