Hi, I am wondering if anyone can give me any advise on which tree to buy.We are overlooked in our garden, so to gain some privacy i need to plant two trees.Money is tight so i need something not too expensive that will grow quick !I am looking for a tree that will not bare leaves for first 4 foot so i can still use my border and will not turn out to be so enormous either.pref something green all year round, maybe with a bit of blossom in spring. Not too thick to block all our light either.Does such a tree exist or am i hoping for too much !!!!!

how big is your garden?

Sleepymumof3 · 05/08/2006 15:08

Hi, its small I`m afraid.Probably 30 foot by 20 ? There is a row of terraced houses behind us and their gardens meet ours at the back.

You could try eucalyptus ver fast growing and you can chop it how you like..but it will grow tall if you let it

silver birch is nice with a not to thick canopy

robinia similarly

mountain ash

or crab apple or a cherry but careful which one

can't think of any evergreens to advise

You are hoping for too much says DH (tree expert'!)
DH says you could look at birch trees - nice white bark although no blossom or leaves in winter. Himalayan birch is pretty he says. These are not fast growing though

For fast growing evergreen - only real choices are leylandii, lawson cyprus and western red cedar. You could trim off lower branches to keep your 4 foot clear

alternatively you could use a pergola arrangement with climbers growing over eg a vine and clematis or wisteria or a rambler like albertine or honeysuckle

ooh honeysuckly is lovely! we have some quite fast growning conifers, they were about £15 each and about 5ft (not tall but getting there)

You can tilt the horizontal bars of the pergola so that they are low at the fence or wall and raised at the front for a more private effect..golden hop is a fast growing climber but disappears entirely in winter

honeysuckle sorry honeysuckly!!

Have planted 3 honeysuckles and all 3 became covered in a sort of white powdery stuff. All the bottom leaves died and this is the second year running.Sprayed with all the antifungal stuff-what am i doing wrong. I love honeysucle and am temped to try growing it from a pot now ?

What about a eucalyptus? They are reasonably cheap, grow quick, have a trunk, are evergreen etc. But you might need to take the loppers to it occasionally depending on the variety you got.
