I havent a clue about gardening. We are struggling to but a house with a garden but ive seen a lovely victorian house and was wondering if its possible. We have a toddler so want to make it a safe place for him to play

It depends how much light it gets really, north facing courtyards are very hard to plant in thought there are shade loving plants around. Personally I've just moved from a house with a courtyard to one with a 'proper' garden because my toddler had definitely outgrown the space.

If you get down to the library or a good bookshap there's usually a selection of gardening books with ideas for courtyard gardens - have a look at those before you decide. Word of warning though - really nice courtyard gardens don't come cheap, for hard landscaping even a small space you'd need to have a budget of at least £500-£1000 IMO if you're paying others to do it, you could save if you do it yourselves. An established garden would probably be cheaper and easier.

a courtyard garden, well you can allways use pots and hanging baskets, they look lovely when they are full of flowers, and arranged around in the court yard.
good luck.
