Bluebottles all over my compost bin. How do I get rid of the buggers?

As it says in the title really. I have been preety good with what I have put in the compost bin, although I bet bloody DP has put something in there he shouldn't have.

Anyone have a clue as to why there are swarming round it like flies round shit, and more importantly, how do I get rid of them in a child friendly way (not keen on using chemicals)

gross My pet hate is bluebottles. Afraid I would spray the buggers with whatever was to hand (yeuch) Hope you get some more constructive comments!

ugh, I'd like to know the answer too, as I have just found maggots (aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhh) in my compost bin. DH poured boiling water on them, but is that right?

Re. blue bottles, is it just the weather at the moment that's making everything go off and rot quicker. Do bluebottles lay eggs and produce maggots (biology not my strong point....)? Maybe chemicals on them after the children are in bed?

Sorry for slight hijack, but maybe the same answer....

flies and that are everywhere, wasps too, there's not alot you can do. i suppose you could put a pile of rotting meat out of the way for them to congregate on. sorry that was no help

We had this I asked MIL who said that the problem is that it's not damp enough. You need it to be moist so I've started throwing water on it everytime I add stuff - this seams to have worked.

so Dh throwing boiling water on the maggots was probably a good idea then. Hurray!
