cos I'm not a borders person and my lawn is really long and thin, I just need something to stop nasty weed-like things springing up at the side of my lawn. There's only about 9 inches of soil there.

I want to put some tough-little-fecker slow-spreading plants in that don't mind getting a bit mown by overenthusiastic dh

some of these must like shade

is this too much to ask?

Periwinkle is a evergreen low growing creeping shrub that would cover your border and produce blue flowers in spring. Go for the lesser variety, so it won't spread too quick. There are dark green and varigated types.

Oh and its fine with shade

camomile?

Creeping Jenny?

Cappucino · 26/07/2006 16:29

thanks very much for all the suggestions

chestnutty I shall look out for periwinkle, it sounds fab

also the camomile; I did fancy that and heard you could plant it on paths so it must be pretty tough

have bought some little low thyme today that the lady on the herb stall said would do the trick

I do have some creeping jenny but worry that it would take over the lawn - do you think it would be okay?

Yes, Ive also got creeping Jenny in a border alongside the lawn, and it doesn't stray onto the lawn at all - seems quite happy to take over the border, instead!

I put creeping jenny in a border which is 6" above my lawn. I still can't get it out of my lawn years later so it's a big no from me. [contrary mary emoticon]
There is the perfect plant for you that doesn't mind being mowed and is perfect for those that don't like borders. It's called grass
Or alternatively, you can get some low growing forms of osteospurnum which don;t mind being mowed (well, mine doesn;t) but need sun for the daisy like flowers.
