Fast growing hedge/tree advice

We're looking for a fast growing hedge/tree to plant so we can block out the view at the back of the garden. Can anyone help and suggest something?

Laurel is pretty good. I'd not advise Lleylandii ( or however you spell it) Hornbeam is lovely, similar to beech but grows very fast indeed. Now is the time to plant it, about 18" apart. Buy from a proper nursery and buy whips, either bare rooted or in pots. Prepare the ground well and stake until established. A little bonemeal will encourage strong root growth. Don't use any other fertiliser until the growing period; spring onwards.

Whatever you do, don't plant Lleylandi. We have recently had an extension build and the option from the planning dept was to get them removed or get much deeper foundations built as their roots are soooo invasive and thick!
