Looks like white buddleia to me.

Sometimesiwonder · 17/09/2013 14:43

Are you sure it's the same thing? Because the picture has a humming bird on it

claudedebussy · 17/09/2013 14:44

the flowers are buddleia-like, but i'm not sure it is a buddleia. the rest of the plant isn't a bush as such, just a stem with leaves coming off. and the flowers are a lilac sort of colour.

it is big - probably 6 foot high. each flower stem is a different plant.

A type of Echium? Very fashionable this year at Chelsea .

mistlethrush · 17/09/2013 14:48

There's a giant lobelia that looks a bit like that... but there wouldn't have been humming birds on it there!

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/09/2013 14:50

I do know what it is but I've forgotten the name. Our neighbour has one in her garden. We are in Jersey and so I guess they are quite tender. I'll look it up and be back!

Lancelottie · 17/09/2013 14:54

Like Crypes, I'd guess it's an echium: there's one on this page

claudedebussy · 17/09/2013 16:41

yes - thanks. i think it is an Echium.

I know what you mean about the lobelia. my brother saw ones like that on Kilimanjaro

crocus doesn't sell it Sad

i guess it's a specialist plant. architectural plants do sell them but not that particular type. oh well.

Thanks for the help everyone.

echt · 18/09/2013 09:48

Deffo echium. They grow like heck in Melbourne and have to be beaten back with a shitty stick.

flow4 · 18/09/2013 20:59

Is it white larkspur ? :)

claudedebussy · 18/09/2013 21:29

echt, does there have to be shit on the stick? or will a normal stick do.

reminds me of this joke: what's brown and sticky?

a brown stick.

OP posts:
echt · 19/09/2013 09:48

claude I think the shitty stick is a reference to bum-wiping devices of back in the day. The Romans used a sponge on a stick in their communal crappers, hence the expression, getting hold of the wrong end the stick.:o

claudedebussy · 19/09/2013 16:42
