what kind of gardening jobs should I be doing now it's autumn (newbie!)

Hi

Just that really, what should I be doing?

I have a front and back garden borders only -rest is paved. We did one flower bed and sever al pots this year. Mostly annuals. Wjat do I do with them as they are starting to die? Do I just let them die and will they break down into the soil? Or do I need to remove them?

Should I be working on soil improvement? Monty don says stuff about digging in the soil?

Is there anything I can plant this time of year? I want to replace the border od annuals with hardy perennials and put thr same in the other uncultivated beds. Also want to grow some veg?

So what should I be doing and when?

Now is the time for planting. So clear out and compost the remains of the annuals, and dig in composted manure or home-made compost if you have it. A good cheap alternative is the soil improver that local authorities sell at their recycling bases.

Then plan your perennial borders. Plant in groups of threes or fives, making sure you check the ultimate heights and spreads that each plant will reach and leaving enough space around them. Tall plants should go at the back, low ones at the front.

Include some evergreen shrubs for winter structure.

On a similar vein, can anyone suggest ideas for what to plant in tubs now?
