What can we plant now that is fairly hardy, undemanding, fast to grow and interesting for children? Veg or flowers.

Tomatoes, sunflowers, courgettes. They sprout within days and grow visibly day by day.

Mustard 'n' cress is always good, as it gets thick quickly and within a short while you can start 'haircutting' it with scissors to put in your sandwiches.

pumpkins but you need the room when you plant out.

Thanks everybody. A trip to the garden centre is called for, I think.

Boys have planted pumpkin seeds in miracle grow compost (it comes in a bag all compressed, you add water and it is ready to grow). they've shot up and we hope to be able to do home grown pumpkins for Halloween.

when I was little I remember growing nasturtiums, forget-me-nots, sweet peas, marigolds and cornflowers.

can't wait until my DD is old enough to enjoy this sort of thing!!

tomatoes are good as are beans and sunflowers. All of those can grow in pots if you don't have a huge garden (like us!).

If you are looking for a really quick return, cress seeds on cotton wool are also great.

My girls aged 4 and nearly 3, are growing tomatoes, strawberries, cucumber, beetroot and carrots.

I might have overstreched myself as we've never tried anything like this before. But the girls love going out to check for new fruit and veg. And the good thing is they get to eat the stuff afterwards.

DD1 told me the other day that she was going to be the best gardener in the world! It was so sweet. She really has taken to working in the garden and even helps me pulling weeds etc.

We've planted sprouts, sweetcorn, broccolli, runner and dwarf beans and parsnips (in the last 3weeks). They're all in pots as still waiting for my veggie beds to be made (they're going to be raised and dh is working too much at the mo for much garden progress) and the slowest to appear have been the parsnips (prob cos they're not underground) everything else has come up like cress. Bit late for toms now and our sunflowers are about to come out too.
