Running out and shouting doesn't work, nor does letting next door's cat have free rein. I wish I knew - they ate all my lettuce, chard and spinach seedlings.

hub2dee · 16/06/2006 21:42

I have heard of a product called 'Buzz off!' made by Agralan Limited and available at garden centres. It is a string you stretch across a bed and the wind makes it vibrate with a noise the birds don't like.

Get a gun - bastards ate all my peas.

i hate them too. only got a small garden. more than 4 pigeon poos and your bound to sit in one

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 16/06/2006 21:48

in fact I posted about them a year or so ago. no-one had any helpful suggestions. they just laughed at me.

MerlinsBeard · 16/06/2006 21:49

throw bread over next doors so they go there instead?

Fauve · 16/06/2006 21:57

We're getting 2 kittens at the end of the summer - that'll sort 'em. We'll have to get extra-carnivorous ones.

themoon66 · 16/06/2006 22:14

The pigeons around here are massive. They come in to land like jumbo jets. They have so much food. You can't shoot em with an airgun, they just laugh it off.

Our local gamekeeper reckons to shoot 100 every couple of days and still can't keep the population down.

this is rural Lincolnshire where we grown millions of acres of grain, which the pigeons think is for them to guzzle and grow fat on.

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 10:40

so im stuck with them? have they all come from trafalgar square? some of them have tags too.. pests

Southeastastra - If you are in a rural area, ask the gamekeeper if he shoots them regularly to keep numbers down. Its his job as part of vermin control.

I hate the buggers with venom. Flapping around, eating every new plant I put in. Landing like elephants on my trellis and bending it. They hit the conservatory roof too coz they can see my large plants inside and try to land on them. Then the slide down the roof and leap on the gutters, bending them.

Every now and then the gamekeeper will have a blitz and we will be down to one or two a day. Then he gets busy doing other things for a month, and we are back to square one with em.

Vermin - flying rats is all they are. Grrrrr

no i don't live in a rural area (wish i did!). they are attracted to the rabbits i have and even cling to the cages. i put my foot on a huge white poo yesterday it's yuck.

i rang a radio station who were discussing it in desperation, they didn't have any answer either!

OP posts:
themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:26

Have you ever managed to catch one or kill one?

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 12:30

no, they're too fast for me! the culprit at the moment is a very fat pigeon.

a while back two actually got into the house and left their poo everywhere. maybe i could try the spray but am worried about the rabbits.

themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:36

The country way is to catch and kill one and hang the body in the garden to deter the others from coming near. It works with magpies too.

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 12:39

blimey my neighbour's would think im a loony, may be worth a try!! Grin

OP posts:
themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:40

Its a technique that has worked for 100s of years in the countryside. Nothing unusual around here.

themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:41

Mind you, this hot weather you would only get a day's hanging before it got a bit smelly. You'd be having to kill one a day to replace it LOL

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 12:42

ok i'll go and have a look for him now argh!

OP posts:
themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:47

Do you have an airgun? You can get some amazing ones now with sights on and everything.

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 12:49

they aren't here yet, it's more of an afternoon visit. my friend's dh has an airgun (licenced of course) can he shoot them!!

OP posts:
themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:51

I wasn't aware you needed a licence for an airgun. Only shotguns and rifles.

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 12:55

i don't really know what he's got to tell the truth.

OP posts:
themoon66 · 17/06/2006 12:58

Well whatever he has, tell him to bring it round for an afternoon's hunting Grin

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 12:58

i think throttling it and hanging it up is the better option, can't believe im typing this, but really am at the end of my tether. i know if i get rid of one more will follow.

southeastastra · 17/06/2006 13:00

i don't know if i should share this with the www but he was once shooting birds at his old work (with their permission)and was spotted by someone who reported it to the police.

later on my friend opened her door to police marksmen all over her garden, hiding in the bushes and the like. she had to explain what he was doing Grin
