What is this fruit in my garden?!

We moved into a new house last year so this is the first time I've seen the fruit plants producing.
There is one bush which is covered with what look like miniature pears - though obviously pears grow on trees. These are growing low to the ground and are green and about 5cm large at the moment.

Anyone got any ideas what they could be?!

They sound like quinces.

They are lovely made into a jelly.

or figs?

marzipanned · 20/08/2013 17:19

Oh I thought quinces grew on trees too! Blush I hope so, yes, I love quince jelly!

Figs - I only wish - they don't have that lovely fig scent, and I'm in Scotland where I don't think a fig tree would have much hope of surviving :)

They could be japonica quince, a small ornamental version grown primarily for it's flowers. They are quite small and bushy rather than tall and tree like. Still edible and tasty though!

we have some sort of quince thing in the front garden - it is a low bush thing but incredibly spikey - japanese quince or something. nice orangey flowers. I keep trying to kill it off because I hate the thorns but it just grows back more happily every time I cut it

Our quince bush has little thorns - forgot to ask that!

Hmm - I don't recall thorns specifically but I was captivated by the fruit! I will check tomorrow.

Will get one in the morning. Am feeling a bit miffed as the gardeners came today and chopped off half the bush - so lots of fruit on the ground and I'm sure you're not meant to prune when they're in fruit..
