Plum tree covered in wasps - normal or is it a nest nearby?

My plum tree (planted nearly 4 years ago) is teeming with wasps.... we had a wasp nest in the eves of the house 2 years ago (that was treated by professional exterminator man) ... do wasps just like plums?? Grin

an EXCELLENT sign
no, wasps (at this time of year) do not eat plums
they are carnivorous hunters who are eating the aphids off your trees
encourage them all you can as they are better than any insecticide

Don't destroy them, they are great for your garden. Just leave them alone and they'll leave you alone. Odds on there is a nest nearby. But it will die off by Oct-Nov depending on the temp and move somewhere else next Spring.

Please don't exterminate them. We need all kinds of insects.

I think the wasps have turned to their sugar diet early this year. My gooseberry bushes are swarming with them to the extent I daren't harvest (not done it sooner cos I've been away on holiday). They are definitely going after the fruit as well.

Thanks for the replies - I wouldn't destroy the nest (even if I could find it!). I just wasn't sure if it was normal or not but they do seem happy enough and will hopefully depart before the plums are ripe enough to pick Grin
